Dances/Styles

International style

The international style is the “English” form of partner dancing. It is most often used competitively around the world, but many people also enjoy performing in this style at designated events, individual show dances or socially.

It consists of 2 sections. The first being “Standard” or the “Ballroom” section. This includes dances such as the Waltz, Tango, Slow Foxtrot, Viennese Waltz and the Quickstep. The second is the “Latin” section, which includes dances such as the Cha-Cha, Rumba, Samba, Paso-Doble and the Jive.

American Style

The American style of dance also consists of 2 sections, the “American Smooth” and the “American Rhythm”.

The American smooth style is mainly danced in the United States of America, however has been gaining popularity worldwide in recent years. The American smooth is loosely similar to the International Standard, however the main difference being that it uses more separated and open figures, and the International Standard is exclusively made up of closed figures. The four dances danced in American smooth are the Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot and Viennese Waltz.

The American Rhythm is also similar to the International Latin, however with some differences in rhythms, tempos and dances. The American Rhythm consists of the Cha-Cha, Rumba, Swing, Bolero and Mambo. It also has a greater variety of patterns which are more suited for more social dancing.

Overall, the technique in both styles are different and also evolves with time, however American style tends to be the more popular choice for social dancing in the United States Of America or for show dances and performances.
